It was almost noon when I reached Chengannor, a small town in the south eastern part of Kerala. I was on my way to Aranmula, which is nearly 10 kms from Chengannor, to view the snake boat race. The snake boat race of Aranmula has a speciality. It is related to the Aranmula Temple and Aranmula Appan, the diety. The snake boat race here have already created a local festival mood and people from far away areas had reached there to view the huge boats and enjoy the race.
When i reached the banks of pamba river ( its here the race took place) it was almost crowded. People were making enjoyable sounds and singing the Vanchipattu ( the boat song). thithi thi thi thi they they thaka tha....
The boats came in four tracks and firstly the boat possession took place in the river. Then the priliminary round started. Those won in the priliminary raced in the semi finals. In the final there were three boats. Mallapuzhasseri, Nedumprayar and kizhukara.
The race started. The spirit of people become uncontrollable. In the neck to neck fight mallapuzhasseri finished first, kizhukara second and nedumprayar last.
